What to consider before adopting a cat
-
Lifestyle Compatibility
Assess your daily routine, activity level, and whether you have enough time to dedicate to a pet. This information should also be considered when choosing the age, activity level and temperament of the cat you wish to adopt.
-
Space & Environment
Ensure you have adequate space for the cat to roam, play, and feel safe. A separate bedroom is recommended to help the cat/kitten acclimate to its new home and family.
-
Long Term Commitment
Understand that cats can live 15 years or more, so be prepared for a long-term commitment. Make sure you have a back up plan should you be unable to keep the cat, fall ill, travel or have to move.
-
Cost
Budget for ongoing expenses like food, litter, veterinary care, and supplies should be calculated and considered before adopting. Cats can cost anywhere between $100 to $200 a month depending on dietary needs, litter and other items you may require.
-
Current Pets
Consider how a new cat will interact with your existing pets and whether a gradual introduction is needed.
We strongly recommend segregating your new cat and slowly introduce them to your pets with constant supervision.
We can provide you with more information upon adoption.
-
Health & Allergies
Check for any allergies in your household to avoid health issues. Consider what you would do if some one develop an allergy after adoption. What medical treatments are available? Does anyone have existing allergies?
-
Time Commitment
Cats and kittens need companionship, playtime and care. Kittens especially require ongoing supervision and interaction to avoid boredom and destructive behavior.
If you have no cat in your home when adopting, consider getting a bonded pair, mom and baby or two siblings to help keep each other company and prevent behavioral issues.
The Adoption Process
-
The first step is to complete our online adoption application form through our website. This is the ONLY way to apply to adopt. Please do not email or use our social media accounts for information regarding adoptions.
Once your application is received, a team member will review it. IF your application is APPROVED, you will receive an email confirming that your application is being processed. Please allow up to 48 hours for a response. We are a small team of volunteers.
At this point, the foster home or a team member will contact you to speak with you about your application. If its a good match for both you and the cat, a visit to adopt or reserve will be arranged through the foster home.
A visit does not guarantee an adoption. Should the foster home or any team member have concerns at that time, an adoption can be refused.
If successful and depending on the cat, you can adopt upon leaving the visit. For shyer cats, we will recommend you return on a later date to pick them up.
Payment must be completed prior to leaving with the cat or to reserve the cat.
Once payment is received, your contract and medical documents will be emailed to you, as well as future vetting requirements or appointments through our assigned vets.
Please note that Refuge Catchat has the right to deny an adoption for any reason.
